This report looks at banking business models and the extent to which these are best designed to meet the economic, environmental and social challenges facing society. Drawing on a group of sustainable banks pursuing business models based on the Principles of Sustainable Banking, this report analyses their performance comparing it to Global Systemically Important Financial Institutions (GSIFIs) using a methodology based on peer group reviews. The report argues that banks which base their models on the Principles of Sustainable Banking provide a compelling approach for the future of banking by focusing on the real economy; offering resiliency through strong capital positions; delivering stable and solid financial returns; and providing for growth.
