The SFM paper discusses the enormous potential for forestry (reforestation and avoided deforestation) to contribute to the abatement of greenhouse gases. The paper explains the reasons why the forestry sector has largely been excluded from carbon markets to date, even though deforestation contributes approximately 20% of annual global carbon emissions and has an even greater abatement potential in combination with reforestation. It outlines the policy developments that will allow the forestry sector to become significant in global carbon markets and a source of sustainable revenue for world's developing economies.
